Ceiling misting fans are a fantastic product to add cooling to any outdoor area with an overhead structure. Many folks are familiar with the typical wall or pedestal misting fans, and traditional ceiling fans, but not ceiling misting fans.

A misting ceiling fan differs from a typical ceiling fan in two significant ways. First, obviously, it is a fan with misting nozzles. Secondly, the fan blades are not the typical large blades you see in ceiling fans. Rather, they are specially designed blades that are housed inside of the fan’s body not visible to the user. Rather than directed downwards like a traditional ceiling fan, the air is directed more outwards such that it is behind, and in the same direction as the nozzles. This helps to facilitate the evaporative cooling of the nozzle’s mist. For this reason, they can achieve better cooling results than line misting layouts in certain cases.

Misting ceiling fans are designed for cooling via the misting function. Due to the design of the blades and the air flow direction, they are not particularly effective as a traditional ceiling fan. Customers trying to decide between a traditional or misting ceiling fan, would need to consider a few factors. First would be the climate and desired results. A traditional ceiling fan will cool by air movement which will cause a cooling sensation when skin moisture evaporates. This method is relatively inexpensive and effective for mild to moderate cooling. Ceiling misting fans on the other hand will typically be more expensive but provide more pronounced cooling.

Installation of a ceiling misting fan is more involved than that of a traditional ceiling fan. That being said, those with an existing ceiling fan can replace it with a misting ceiling fan easily since power and possibly switches have already been provided. In addition to the power, a high-pressure mist line must be brought to the fan. A high-pressure pump will then need to be installed in a remote location to provide the 1000 psi water pressure needed for the fan. Any number of fans can be run from a single pump, meaning that this part of the installation needs to be done only once.

So, which is better, traditional perimeter misters or ceiling misting fans? The answer is either or both. A traditional perimeter system needs a defined perimeter structure that is at a height of 7’-10’ for optimal performance. If the mist area is particularly deep or wide, then the cooling effect may not be felt towards the middle of the area. In this case, misting ceiling fans may be needed by themselves or to supplement the perimeter system. If a structure has a ceiling height above 10’, the ceiling misting fans may be the better choice. Misting ceiling fans should be mounted at around 10’ heights but custom length down rods can be supplied to accommodate most any ceiling height.

How many ceiling misting fans are needed? The cooling effect from a misting ceiling fan extends outward from the center of the fan from 12’ to 20’ in diameter depending on the model. So, in square footage, areas up to 300 sq. ft can be cooled with a single fan.

Other considerations will include the nozzle size selection. This will depend on the climate and the height of the ceiling. Lower ceilings in humid environments may use ,006” nozzles whereas areas with higher ceilings and dry humidity may use up to .012” nozzles. The next consideration will be the pump size. As previously mentioned, any number of fans can be run off of one pump, dozens or more. The pump size is not based on the number of fans, but rather the quantity and size of the nozzles being used. We can calculate the proper size pump needed for your installation.
